Writer's Guidelines

Guidelines for Contributing articles to INDIAN LIFE

Indian Life is published bimonthly by Intertribal Christian Communications (Indian Life Ministries), an international, evangelical non-profit organization. The newspaper is designed to help the Native North American church speak to the social, cultural and spiritual needs of her people and reaches every province and state of English-speaking North America . Our stance is non-political as well as non-denominational.

WRITING STYLE: Should be simple but not childish. We aim at a reading level of about grade eight. Paragraphs should be short and long sentences should be avoided.

APPROACH: Most of our writers are Native, but non-Native authors are published from time to time. Native writers are preferred because they speak from within the culture rather than as interested outsiders.

LENGTH: Article length will vary according to type of article or story. Maximum length is 2000 words. We reserve the right to edit and shorten all submissions.

TYPES OF ARTICLES/STORIES

FICTION: Only a limited amount of fiction is used. Both current and historical settings are acceptable. Should have a biblical element. Only three or four are used during a year.

LEGENDS: Need positive themes. Indian Life will likely editorialize with a biblical application if one isn't built in. Authors will require much insight.

Length: 250-800 words

NEWS: Emphasize human-interest stories, success and achievements. No politics, marches, riots, etc. Stress the positive. Photos or illustrations appreciated. Payment of $40.00 per photo used.

Length: 100-500 words

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES: Personal accounts of problems faced and overcome through following the Creator's Path. Not preachy but needs definite biblical overtones.

Length: 300-1500 words

FEATURE ARTICLES: Deal with current problems faced by today's North American Native peoples and offer suggestions for solutions. Scriptural principles favored. Suitable topics might include coping with discrimination, poverty, self-esteem, single parent families. Could take the form of a report on how a community, church or group successfully dealt with a certain issue.

Length: 300-1200 words

PHOTO FEATURE: Traditional or unusual Native crafts, work or play or occupationspretty well anything that shows Native people in a positive light. Captions and brief write-ups should accompany photos. Send clear photos in either color or black and white. Prefer photos sent via email as 300 dpi (Dots per inch) jpeg or tif.

POETRY: Limited use of poems. Can deal with any of the previously mentioned themes.

SEASONAL ARTICLES: Should be sent in at least six months in advance. Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, spring, summer, fall, winter

Length: 250-1000 words

PAYMENT: As a non-profit organization, we rely heavily on the generosity of authors in donating their work. However, we do pay 15 cents a word to a maximum of $150. We pay $40 per photo; $30 for fillers; $40 for poetry

Where an exception is warranted, an amount will be negotiated as appropriate.

QUERY: Manuscripts will be read but query letters are preferred. A request to see a proposed article is NOT a promise that we will use or purchase said article. Indian Life will reply within six weeksplease be patient. Email queries answered much sooner.

POSTAGE: We do prefer receiving manuscripts via email. However, don't send a complete manuscript unless requested to do so. Query first via email. Canadian writers please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope (SAE) if you wish your article returned. U.S. writers do not send U.S. stamps but enclose a check or international money order for $3.50 along with SAE. A sample of the newspaper and a hard copy of the guidelines are available to writers on request.
